A Wedding Big on Romance, Small in Cost

What’s romantic about beginning a life together in debt? Not much, that’s for sure. It’s certainly not a responsible way for a couple to begin, particularly when money problems account for so much of the strife in many marriages. Yet that’s exactly how many couples begin, often due to the enormous cost of hosting a wedding.

What’s the price tag on an average American wedding today? Almost $29,000, according to market researchers. You might scoff and envision elaborate, over-the-top affairs, but a wedding doesn’t need to be luxurious to reach that level of expense. When you consider the many aspects of a wedding budget, it becomes clear how the costs can pile up. Typically, a wedding budget needs to include everything from the food, drinks and music at the reception to the aisle runner and champagne toasting flutes.

So what’s a couple to do? If they consider the fact that the decision to get married is actually a very personal one, perhaps they might choose to start their life’s journey together in a more private way. The notion of eloping has some fairly negative, old-fashioned connotations, but it doesn’t have to be sneaky or spur of the moment. It can simply be about choosing to begin a marriage according to the wishes of the couple rather than the expectations of the extended family. Have Hawaii beach weddings always caught your fancy? Do the lights and excitement of Las Vegas get your pulse thrumming? Have you always wanted to take a cruise? Why not realize your dream with the one you love?

That $29,000 price tag, by the way, does not include a honeymoon. Deciding to elope gets you the trip and still saves you money! You can certainly find Caribbean cruises or Vegas hotel chapels or Oahu wedding packages for a lot less than a traditional wedding.

Instead of starting out your life together with the stress of strained credit cards, you can create an exquisite, intimate day. Sure, it may turn out that you have to buy your own toaster, since cousin Judy won’t be gifting you with one, but isn’t the trade-off worth it?
